Maths

We explore maths daily through play. This includes number songs and rhymes, shape recognition within our environment, counting with accuracy through building with blocks, looking at measure and capacity by playing with sand, water and mud. Mathematical language is modelled by the adults in play.

The curriculum has been carefully planned to ensure lots of prerequisite skills.  We do a lot of work on conceptual and perceptual subitising and ensuring children understand that numbers have a cardinal, ordinal and nominal value. We also do a lot of work with five and ten frames which provide the basis on which they will learn number bonds, place value and most other numerical skills as they progress into Primary School.

We promote problem-solving in our continuous provision and provide a variety of enhancements to teach new skills and allow children to practise these skills.

We follow Development Matters and our Curriculum Goals to guide us in the curriculum we teach. This covers the areas of communication and language; physical development; personal, social and emotional development; literacy; mathematics; understanding the world and expressive arts and design. This ensures that we deliver a broad and balanced learning experience for each child.
