Learning & Curriculum in Reception
Termly Overview - Autumn
This term our themes are All about me and Space.
In Literacy, we will be learning to recognise single letter sounds of the alphabet and to blend sounds to read simple words such as- pit, mat, top and sat. To listen to stories attentively. To write their name with increasing accuracy. To enjoy having a go at writing. |
You could support your child by reading to them a variety of different stories every day, including traditional tales such as Jack and the Beanstalk. Encourage your child to put pencil/pen/paint to paper with early mark making. Support your child to write their name. Encourage development of finger skills by threading cotton reels or getting messy with corn flour, shaving foam or sand. Practise writing letter shapes in foam and sand. |
In Maths, we will be learning to count, compare and understand the composition of numbers to five e.g. 3 is made of a group of 2 and a single one. We will begin to use language such as 1 more than and 1 less. We will use numbers in familiar contexts such as songs. Also, we will learn the names for basic 2D shapes. |
You could support your child by singing number songs. Use numbers in everyday life, e.g. when shopping. Match numbers to groups of objects. Go on a shape hunt at the park and in your home. Read bus numbers and count how many stairs you climb. Look at a calendar each day and say the day, e.g. ‘It’s the fifteenth of June.’ |
In Understanding the World, we will be learning to use talk to tell others about significant events in our lives. To talk about our own personal histories. To talk about changes in the environment e.g. how the leaves on the trees are changing. To talk about healthy foods. Discuss different festivals such as Diwali and Harvest Festival. |
You could support your child by looking at photos of your child when they were first born and talking about how he/she has changed. Ask questions to older relatives about what life was like when they were young. Encourage healthy eating at home. Go on a nature walk and look at the different trees. |

Literacy
Each term we will deliver Read, Write Inc, starting with the whole-class Strong Start programme. Later, we will split in smaller reading groups which will challenge every child appropriately. Children will work each day to focus on their reading and writing. You can help them by sharing reading each night and practising their letter sounds, e.g. looking at signs when you are out and about in your environment. .

Our Reading corners are a place where children can curl up and lose themselves in a book or transport themselves to exciting new worlds. We love to celebrate our Reading Role Models - our amazing mums, dads, grannies and grandpas, aunties and uncles, brothers and sisters and friends who have supported and inspired our love of books.
Maths
We follow the NCETM Teaching for Mastery scheme of learning to carefully plan our mathematics curriculum for our children. For more information about the scheme please see the parents guide linked below.
