We were lucky enough to look after some living eggs in the classroom. They lived in an incubator, which needed to be topped up with water each day. This kept the eggs warm, as though they were still with their mother. After three days, all the eggs had hatched, so they chicks moved to the brooder box, once their feathers had dried out.

The chicks were very noisy, and they needed fresh water and food twice a day. Their newspaper and sawdust got very messy, so they needed a good clean out every day to keep them happy and healthy. After a week, they were rehomed on free-range farms. We met some a grown up chicken, called Pika, to see what they would look like fully grown.

We put eggs in order to show the development of the embryo and drew pictures of the lifecycle of a chicken.
