Spelling

'Words cast spells - they's why it's called spelling...'

Spelling in KS1

In Early Years, children are encouraged to discriminate between sounds, link sounds to letters and begin to use this knowledge to read and write. Read Write Inc. is used to teach, practise and assess phonics and spellings.

In Year 1 children are taught to spell by segmenting words into phonemes (sounds) and representing these by graphemes (letters).

Spelling in Year 2 and KS2

In Year 2 upwards children use the PIXL ‘Clued Spelling’ system, which is an individualised spelling programme driven by the children and closely monitored by the teaching staff. Each child is allocated a set of spellings.

The set lists are based on:

•the first 300 high frequency words

•selected spellings from the next 400 - 1000 high frequency words

•Spellings from the National Curriculum for Years 3 &4 and Years 5&6

•Past SATs papers

All children are placed on a list suitable for their ability level, and through a process of self-led learning, peer support and teacher coaching they work to learn each of the words on their set using the word 'clues'.
